FAQs

Here are our FAQs. If you still have questions and queries, please contact us here.

  • We treat a variety of presentations across the life span. Each of our clinicians have their own specialised areas. The most common areas we treat are stress, anxiety-related disorders, depression, work and burnout, marriage and relationship issues, parenting, life changes and transitions, trauma, neurodiversity, grief, identify, and self-esteem. If you are still unsure whether we can help you, please contact us at [email protected] and one of our team members will make contact to discuss your concerns with you and see if one of our practitioners might be a good fit.

  • For children and adolescents, we offer an initial assessment (80 minutes) to speak with the young person and their family members. Subsequent individual therapy sessions with the young person are 50 minutes.

For adults, a therapy session is 50 minutes long.

For couples, a therapy session is 60 minutes long.

The number of sessions required will vary considerably depending on individual needs, support requirements, and the complexity of the presentation. Your clinician will discuss a treatment plan and provide a suggestion for the number of sessions during their first session with you.

  • Our 2025 fees schedule can be found here.  If you are looking to get a diagnostic assessment pricing, then please visit our assessment page for the fee cost.

Payment must be made on the day. We have an EFTPOS card machine on site. We can also send you an electronic invoice if you wish to make a claim with your insurance company.

Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice before the appointment or non-attended appointments without any prior notice will incur a cancellation fee.

  • As a private practice, Building Minds charges full consultation fees in order to operate and run the clinic. We do not receive government funding.

Free treatment can sometimes be accessed through your GP service. We cannot make a referral for you. This means that you need to speak to your GP if you want to access free services through the government.

We offer subsidised prices if you want to see our Intern Clinical Psychologist or Child Psychotherapist student. Both are closely supervised by our founder Dr Camilla Nguyen, Clinical Psychologist.

  • Our clinicians have a combined wealth of expertise in assessing and supporting children, young people, and adults with neurodiverse presentations. Our team of clinicians including clinical psychologists, educational psychologists and pediatricians are considered leading experts in this field and we pride ourselves of using the gold standard in assessments. We collect information from multiple sources, which help improve the quality and validity of the outcome. We work as a team looking at the information before make a diagnosis, which increases the rigor of the diagnostic process. We also go through the diagnosis and recommendations in detail with you.

  • GP referrals are not necessary, we are happy to accept self-referrals.

We will discuss with you on a case by case situation if we require a GP referral.

We also accept GP referrals and from other allied professionals through emailing us directly [email protected]

  • All of our clinicians are fully qualified and trained professionals.

Our psychologists are registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board. In addition, our educational psychologists, paediatrician, speech and language therapist, and counsellor are licensed, accredited, and associated with their respective professional organisations.

We are also very proud to be a teaching clinic, where we take students and interns on placement. For 2025, we have an Intern Clinical Psychologist and a Child Psychotherapist student on placement.

  • Our in-house paediatrician can prescribe medication for ADHD and other mood disorders in children (up to 17 years old). For older teens and adults, we refer on to our psychiatrist colleagues, with whom we work closely, and who can prescribe medication should you want to access medication.

  • We will ask if you consent to us liaising with your previous providers (if any) as well as family, friends, partners, place of work, or school/tertiary institution. We also work closely with other health professionals – in particular, psychiatrists – and government bodies. If we think other agencies might be beneficial or more suitable for your care, we will discuss this with you and seek your consent before referring you on.
